According to the WHO, a country needs a minimum stock of Blood equal to 1% of its population. This means India needs 12 million units of blood, but only nine million are collected annually.
One unit of Blood can save three lives,if it is processed into its components -RBCs, Platelets and plasma.
The supply of Blood depends on three types of Donation - voluntary(unpaid), professional(paid) and as replacement for used Blood.
Thalassemia patients should receive Blood transfusions every 3 weeks lifelong in order to stay alive. India is short of 13.5 lakh litres of Blood a year!
